Abstract: A new tree species, Celtis guatemalensis Eisermann, Zamengo & Chamorro (Cannabaceae: Celtis subg. Celtis) is described and illustrated based on morphological characters. The species is similar to Celtis caudata Planch. but differs in several characters on stipules, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Celtis guatemalensis occurs in semi-deciduous forest of the volcanic Pacific slope highlands of Guatemala. Phenology data was derived from six years of field observations. An updated identification key to the species of Celtis in Mexico and Central America is provided. Full-text view-only version.

The description of this new tree species is the result of a study lead by a researcher from Bird-Studies-Guatemala, in collaboration with researchers from Instituto de Pesquisa Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Universidad Nacional de Rosario (Argentina), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and the Herbarium UVAL at Centro de Estudios Ambientales y Biodiversidad (CEAB) of Universidad del Valle de Guatemala.
